RM1623 Trenton, New Jersey Contract m1861 – stamped NJ – and dated 1863. This example of the model 1861 .58 caliber Springfield type rifle musket was contracted to the U.S. Government by James T. Hodge & Addison M. Burt of the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company, Trenton, New Jersey. The Trenton contract was received on December 26, 1861, for 50,000 rifles, but only delivered 11,500 in 1863. Their full production only numbered approximately 22,000.

RM1600 New York variant US Contract Musket c1850. Smoothbore steel barrel, 70 cal. With bayonet lug and steel ramrod. Round tail flintlock with roller frizzen marked, I.P. Moore Warranted. Walnut stock with cross hatched wrist. All steel hardware with three barrel rings. Overall length of the musket is 56” long. A small silver nameplate at the tang and lack of military marks indicate this may have been a rifle intended for a civilian market. Moore was a gunsmith who ran a military store on Broadway, Manhattan, NYC from 1820 – 1880. Moore likely imported this musket, including the lock, which appears to be British made. This musket is a variant of the original French 1766 style musket, which spawned a variety of similar musket models through the War of 1812 into the Civil War. For years, the basic model was contracted by the government to numerous gun makers to supply state militias. Since this gun has no other marks than the name on the lock, it is impossible to define the actual maker or exact militia assigned, or as stated above; it may have been intended for civilian use.

RM1620 Single sided wooden sign advertising “Headquarters of the Ladies of the G.A.R.” in black lettering on a discolored white painted background. Original eye hooks remain in the top for hanging purposes. Unsigned. Measurements: 21 5/8” wide x 11” tall x 7/8” thick. (NOTE: The Ladies of the G.A.R. refers to the “Ladies Grand Army Republic” – a Women’s Auxiliary Organization founded in 1866 for the mothers, daughters, wives and sisters of Union Veterans of the Civil War that is dedicated to preserving the history of the Union and advocating for veteran’s rights and benefits.)

RM1599 Pair of Civil War Union Soldier Tintypes - possibly brothers - along with a remnant piece of hand stitched quilt. One soldier is holding his kepi in the photograph. Found in a Maryland Estate. Measurements: each is between 2 3/8”- 2 ½” wide and 2 7/8” tall.

A double-sided hand written tag attached reads: “….This buckle was found in a deep ravine about three miles north of the battlefield at Port Republic, among some human bones, some years after the battle. A small piece of rotten leather was attached.” On one side and “From S. W. Lauck Harrisonburg Va” “Mrs. C. H. Revercomb Covington, Va.” On the reverse side. Buckle measures 3 ¼” wide x 2” tall. (Note: Samuel William Lauck (1864-1931) was born in Frederick Co., VA, the son of gunsmith Simon Lauck (1816-1901). By 1900 he had relocated to Harrisonburg, VA, where he became a successful businessman. Mrs. C. H. Revercomb (1871-1948) was the wife of Charles Howard Revercomb (1863-1949), a prosperous farmer and postmaster of Covington, VA.)
