RM1520 Civil War Cavalry Carbine Sling Buckle marked ‘E. Gaylord Chicopee Mass’, ‘US’, and ‘T.J. Shepard’. A double-sided hand written tag attached reads: “….This buckle was found in a deep ravine about three miles north of the battlefield at Port Republic, among some human bones, some years after the battle. A small piece of rotten leather was attached.” On one side and “From S. W. Lauck Harrisonburg Va” “Mrs. C. H. Revercomb Covington, Va.” On the reverse side.
Buckle measures 3 ¼” wide x 2” tall.
(Note: Samuel William Lauck (1864-1931) was born in Frederick Co., VA, the son of gunsmith Simon Lauck (1816-1901). By 1900 he had relocated to Harrisonburg, VA, where he became a successful businessman. Mrs. C. H. Revercomb (1871-1948) was the wife of Charles Howard Revercomb (1863-1949), a prosperous farmer and postmaster of Covington, VA.)
